Construction of Nicholas church was completed in 1909 to contest the architect S. Valovskogo. Project development and construction were carried out under the guidance of renowned architect Vladimir of Kiev Gorodetsky. Construction lasted 10 years (1899-1909)
Architect V. Gorodetsky was born in Ukraine, graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts with a silver medal. His work has been marked by bold engineering solutions using the latest advances in science and technology. For the construction of the church, VV Gorodetsky has applied for a new time of construction material - concrete. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church - one of the most beautiful buildings of the twentieth century - was built in the Gothic stylized forms with high spiers lancet, differs slender proportions, ease, clarity of compositional structure. Among the best works of the architect V. Gorodetsky in Kiev, but the church - the building of the State Museum of Ukrainian Fine Art, Karaite kenasa (now - the House of Actor) and his own house (the house with "Chimera").
In 1909 the church was consecrated, although construction was not completed.
After 1917 the church was closed. In the 30-year tye used as a warehouse, and later there was a backup.
During the Second World War the building was substantially damaged.
In December 1978 it was decided the Council of Ministers of the USSR for the establishment of the National Kiev House of Organ and Chamber Music of the Ministry of Culture of USSR and refurbishing for its concert hall premises of the former Nicholas church. Placement of a concert hall in a former church required a large amount of work required for its operation in a new capacity. Along with the restoration (author of the O.Grauzhis) was carried out and partial reconstruction (author of the I.Tukalevsky).
Particular attention is paid to aesthetic design and creation of favorable conditions of the hall. For interior design houses were constructed in the Baltic stained glass windows, the furniture factory in Lviv - soft stylized furniture, Kivercy Ivano-Frankivsk region - high-quality flooring.
The body of the Kyiv House of Organ Music has been specially created by masters firms «Rieger-Kloss» in Krnov in Czechoslovakia. In the design took into account the possible combinations of organic forms of the instrument the interiors of the former Nicholas church. The organ registers 55, distributed in three manual keyboards and pedals, 3846 pipes of various diameters and lengths (from 13 mm to 6 meters), made of metal and fine wood (used black and red). The Authority has a broad tonal palette, and it was successfully executed works of various styles from early music to contemporary authors.
